The National Meeting of Tourism in quilombolas Villages

In the middle of June the STF will decide about the constitutionality of a law regarding the quilombola land recognition. This decision threaten many villages that had received or would like to receive the land title.

In the second day (June the 9th) the villages of Ivaporunduva and André Lopes was visited. In this way, the participants from so many places, could know the local reality and compare with their ones.

In the last day, some proposals and recommendations about strategies and policies regarding quilombola community tourism was. These proposals will be presented to a panel of public bodies representatives, among whom: Ministry of Tourism, of Environment of Racial Equal Opportunities. Each night

last weekend I attended in Cuiabá (Mato Grosso, Brazil) the "Technological Exchange Workshop about Native Bee Breeding, BETWEEN producer communities, civil society researcher and organizations. Produtction and preservation systems and native honey bees legal framework".

There Were Represented The Following Institutions: Institute Iraquara Native Bees Project (Maranhão), University of São Paulo / Bee Laboratory, Institute of Biosciences , Apruscipesc (Santarém), Support Center Community Action Projects - CEAPAC (Santarém), Institute Peabiru , Instituto Sociedade População e Natureza , RETE ; some representatives of the indigenous peoples (Judiá e Kaiabí); some others producers.

In the first days were presented the different experiences, with focus on: number and caracteristics of the involved communities, kind of breeded bees, experiences' history, breeding and managing techniques, honey collecting technologies.

In the second day, the focus was turned on the marketed products, and on the organizational arrangements. The participants tasted the honey produced by: Wilson Mello, Apruscipesc (Neida Rego), pelo Francisco Melo e Instituto Iraquara. The legal framework was discussed.

A concept note was submitted to the European Union, in answer to the call “Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development” (EuropeAid/129492/C/ACT/TPS).

The title of the project is “ Sustainable development of regions characterised by indigenous and tradicional peoples, by a participatory, fair and sustainable land management ( ordenamento territorial )”.

The applicant is the Instituto Socioambiental, and the partners are: Associação Construindo Comunidades (ACC), of Angola, GVC , and RETE , of Italy and the Open Society , of South Africa. The countries involved in the proposal are: Angola , Bolivia, Brazil and Mozambique.

Rio de Janeiro, RJ ); Cartola is one of the samba fathers, he appears thin, as consumed by a strong enthusiasm, but smiling, the cigarette smoke designing a strange mask in his face; the brilliant pink dominates the front of the scene, where a brown background hosts some symbols of the singer, like the guitar (pink, with its opposite light green, the colours of the Mangueira traditional Rio school of samba).

The brown is the main colour of the series vaqueiros ( Vaqueiros no sert ão do Ceará, 1969. Ceará, Brasil ) ; the image impressed me the most, is a portrait , where the man hat is of a reddish brown, as his face itself: smoothed by the same winds and the same tanning. This monochrome face stands against a monochrome pale blue background, far from the violent black & white of the picture from the book Bahia amada Amado .

Here the fishermen's features disappear against the shiny sea, lightened by the sun, and the men are black shadows within a dazzling light ; there is not any moral meaning: they, the shadows are coming to catch from the light the fruit of the light: a fish that, shining, the central fisherman offers to the observer.

Our new dining table doityourself. Uugnaa and I have long dreamed of a low table, as we had seen it in countless films. A meal at the 10 € coffee table with sawed off legs of our neighbors (German-Japanese family with girls in Anu's age convinced) us from the practice and a book about living in Korea (the top 10 000, of course, but so what) gave ideas. My father was in the old calf barn or 10cm thick slabs of poplar, which in 1990 was cut from the hedge. Thus, a plate, we have reduced to dining table length, sanded and waxed. Partnerships in the Lower-Amazon region

From March the 14th to the 24th I spent some time in the Middle-Lower Amazon region, Pará, Brasil.

With me, Rodolfo Canciani, of the Italian NGO Fratelli dell'Uomo .

The aim of our trip in this beautiful region was to overlook the work of some organizations, in order to evaluate the feasibility of the partnership establishment .

First, we visited the municipality of Oriximiná, one of the bigger in the region. Here we met the Rural Workers Union .

People from both the plateau ( planalto ) and the river bank ( ribeirinhos ) attended the meeting; the first ones main crops are rice, beans, corn and cassava; the second ones plant and process cassava and have a tradition of extractivism (Brazilian chestnut, wood, etc.). The main challenges of the Rural Workers Union are now: the implementation of the rural settlements created in the region, a good use of the government credit, some form of centralization and processing of the villages' products (in first stance fruits), and the writing of project proposals, in order to access funding opportunities.

Then we came back to Santarém, where we met the Centro de Apoio a Projetos de Ação Comunitária (CEAPAC) and the regional chief of the State Ministry of Agriculture (SAGRI).

We travelled then to Prainha, a municipality lower in the Amazon river.

Here came to be created a protected area, called Renascer ( RESEX Renascer ), as the final act of a long season of struggles, started in 2000 (see more about the RESEX Renascer here ; the protected area creation did not prevented the clandestine loggers to attack the forest and the people of this region. Here we reached Santo Antonio , a village in the Tamuataí riverbank, 24 hours far from Santarém, by boat; here we appreciated the skill of the local people making cassava cracker ( beijú ) and wood handicrafts.

We slept here, under a starry sky, listening at the monkeys sound, far away in the forest. Soon in the morning we went to the near village of Espírito Santo, where we had a meeting with the local people. The main challenge in the region are the basic services , a duty the government does not comply with, and the sustainable development of the people of the protected area; a non-spoken, but clear priority is the legitimation and strengthening of the protected area new organization, the " association mother "; in this process, the conflict of antagonist political parties in the region, it is an obstacle.

From the Tamuataí river we went to the Vira Sebo village, at the encounter of the Ururará with the Amazon river. Here we spent almost a day with the local fishermen, who live in wood piles, sometimes of great quality and beauty. We heard the poem written by a wise man, listing a great number of bird, fish, mammal, reptile species, some of them extinct.

The main challenges here are the management of the most important natural resource, fish, the improvement in the commercialization of the fish and its by-products, like piracuí (fish flour), and a better water quality.

At the end of our trip we met the local NGO Centro de Estudo, Pesquisa e Formação dos Trabalhadores do Baixo-Amazonas (CEFT-BAM), and the German NGO DED , in order to discuss some means of implementation of our partnership strategy in the region.
